Hilltribe Organics is an early stage social impact investment developed by Arvind Narula, Richard Blossom and Markus Dietrich at the YPO & WPO Catapult Social
Entrepreneur Program 2012.
We are a social enterprise committed to uplifting hill tribe communities by providing fully organic, highly nutritious eggs to the environmentally and socially conscious consumer. By working harmoniously within existing natural and social systems in the hill tribe areas, our company offers superior organic products that generate knowledge and income to uplift disenfranchised rural communities while respecting and preserving their unique way of life.
Our vision is to transform poor rural communities by at least doubling family income by partnering with them in value-added profitable businesses that complement their daily lives.
Why Beyond Organic?
One has to be very careful with understanding the terms “free range” and “organic” eggs as they are misused all over the world. You will rarely find those different quality types combined. We are one of few who thrive to combine those two in order to assure the use of humane practices:
Free-range eggs are eggs produced using hens that are permitted to roam freely within a farmyard, a shed or a chicken coop.
Organic egg production is the production of eggs through organic means. In this process, the poultry are fed organic feed from birth.
Organic does not equate to humane practices: eg. some US organic egg certification allows chickens to be housed in dark 100 foot long houses holding 20,000 chickens with “access” to the outdoors consisting of 0.025m (1 inch) “balcony”. In contrast, we will hold 650 chickens on 2,400m² – more than 100 times as much space per hen.
